Gallery :: Young, Lester :: Lester Young

Name:Lester Young
Description:While I had been excited for many years by the wonderful solo passages that lit up so many of Lester's records with Basic, our paths did not cross until the twilight of his career, in 1957. It was at one of the jazz package shows that periodically visited Indianapolis, and I made sure to be backstage, courtesy of a friendly stagehand. I caught sight of Lester wandering aimlessly through the scene, pausing to look in on a dice game, then moving on, seemingly uninvolved with anyone else. I was toting my 4x5 Speed Graphic camera in those days, and I may have appeared to be a press photographer, for when I requested his cooperation for a photography, he assented right away. We took a couple shots backstage, then one or two in the dressing room. If I had know that this would be the last time I would ever see him, I would have made more of the occasion. Ah-hindsight!
Year:1957
