| Description: | In looking back across the years, I am struck by how much we owe to those producers who risked money and spent energy in bringing top jazz talent to the country and overseas. Were it not for their touring package shows and festivals, jazz could not have enriched our lives so happily. This photo of Mulligan's quartet (which included Bob Brookmeyer, valve trombone; Bill Crow, bass; and drummer Gus Johnson, who unfortunately is not visible), with guest artist Coleman Hawkins on tenor saxophone, was taken in 1962 at the Ohio Valley Jazz Festival in Cincinnati, an edition of George Wein's famous Newport jazz Festivals. One of the beauties of jazz is the ability of master players to work together seamlessly no matter what their perceived "school" may be. I am aware that the idea is almost impossible to illustrate in a photograph, but it comes to mind each time I look at this image. |
