Gallery :: Monk, Thelonious :: Thelonious Monk

Name:Thelonious Monk
Description:I was really anxious to photograph Monk. I had not focused much on the modern players in my New York days, and it was with pleasure that I found him leading a quartet on stage in Indianapolis in 1959. I remember sitting out front and taking a few shots of the group, but Monk's back was turned toward the audience, and I quickly went behind the scenes for something more personal. A small grand piano provided the setting, and Monk, a lover of various forms of headgear, showed up wearing a straw coolie hat. I thought this a bit frisky, and after taking a couple of shots of him with it on, I asked him for a bare-headed pose, which he readily assumed. As the years went by, I began to like the "character" poses better than the straight version. It seems that Monk could bring almost anyone around to his way of thinking!
Year:1959
