Gallery :: Kessel, Barney :: Barney Kessel

Name:Barney Kessel
Description:While on a summer-long trip to California in 1949, I first saw Kessel close up as he jammed with musicians of all schools at Nappy Lamare's Club 47, located in the Valley. I was able to get a decent photo of the intense young man, and I carried that memory in my head when I next saw him at a downtown hotel in Indianapolis almost thirty years later, working with two supporting musicians on bass and drums.

I had come well equipped with film and electronic flash, and my fascination with his playing kept me shooting until a man at a ringside table gently asked, "Do you have enough now?" Reluctantly I quit, but I am convinced that the old fire I had seen in California was now joined to an enhanced technique. Barney, like the finest of wine, had improved with age.
Year:1978
